1986 started off with a bang, when the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded on January 28th in front of a live television audience. Four months later, the USSR dealt with their own historic disaster, when an explosion in Chernobyl's nuclear reactor number four taught the world a costly lesson about nuclear power.
